I worked with my mother who is 62 years old on the Heart Stories workshop activity. She wanted to participate in this activity because as a retired nurse she enjoys participating in workshops that highlight mental health awareness.
With this workshop she was invited to create a heart story and talk about what it meant to her. Using words and imagery she was able to create a beautiful piece that symbolized different areas of her heart and feelings. She drew multiple hearts inside of the heart that she said “signifies my family and friends who have been a part of my life.”
My mom expressed how she uncovered many feelings that arose during this activity. Through the workshop she felt that she went back in time and could see the moments that brought her joy and that creating this heart story brought calm moments alongside some reflective ones.
She said she felt gratitude throughout this activity and that it was very therapeutic and meaningful for her. She said, “There are many things I could talk about and write down onto my heart story but there would be too much writing.”
