The Healing Power of Art

“Therapeutic,” “Educational,” “Healing,” “Phenomenal” and “Spiritual” are some of the words used by participants to describe JDI-SA’s three-day trauma-informed art and human sexuality workshop with members of the LGBTIQ+ community, some of whom are survivors of sexual abuse in detention.

“The Healing Power of Art” short film celebrates participants’ journeys to self-acceptance while challenging society’s rigid sex-gender binary. The stories are connected by a sense of hope for a more equitable future.

As Windows Facilitators, we left the three days feeling lucky and privileged to facilitate and be a part of such an affirming and healing space. We plan to heed the call of participants and extend the three-day process to others, including people who are currently incarcerated.
