Igniting Our Inner Light Together

I facilitated Ignite My Inner Light with a group of my colleagues, mental health providers who serve children and families facing trauma, ADHD, anxiety, depression, Autism, and other social-emotional challenges. These providers bring passion and commitment to their work every day, but holding space for others’ struggles can take a real toll. When I offered an art workshop during our extended lunch break, they were eager to set their caseloads aside and create something for themselves. They were so very excited to do an art activity together!

Everyone was engaged and talkative, and they were surprised by the creative and artistic range that emerged. We all reflected on the same question, what ignites our inner light, yet the topics, colors, descriptions, and stories people shared varied greatly. That was encouraging and exciting to see! As colleagues explained their artwork, we learned things about one another that rarely come up in a typical workday. We got to know each other better, not just as providers but as people.

“This was fun!” one participant said, and the group agreed. They asked to make this kind of workshop a monthly practice. The conversation then turned to how similar art activities could support the groups we work alongside, including child welfare workers, caregivers, and child advocacy agencies. After the workshop, one provider posted a picture of our artwork on social media with the caption, “Happiness is working with your favorite people.” Everyone finished the workday in a lighter, more connected way!

That moment stayed with me. In helping professions, we often pour everything into others and forget to refuel ourselves. This workshop reminded me that a little time, some art supplies, and a safe space can reconnect us to our own light and to each other, so we can keep bringing that light to the children and families we serve. I am deeply grateful for A Window Between Worlds and ALL the amazing work that they are doing!
