Free to Fly

Until recently our agency has been using AWBW curriculum primarily in one-on-one settings with clients. Recently, I was able to get an adult art workshop group (with daycare provided) off the ground. Our first group had three female participants whose ages are 18, 26 and 53, and they are all working with us because they are survivors of domestic violence.

Two of the three really enjoy art and consider themselves artistic and the third really needs more of the social connection you can get from a group like this. During the creation part of workshop, the discussion went to music and which genres they all listened to. As the participants talked, I quietly took notes so I could add some of their favorites to a playlist for the next group.

At one point, JB stated, “My world has changed, I can be beautiful and free to fly over the flowers. This survivor has finally been able to break free from control, physical and emotional abuse, as well as isolation after 18 years with her abusive husband.

All the participants expressed enjoying the workshop and were excited when I asked if I could hang their creations in the “Art Gallery” board on the main floor of our residential facility.
