Vision Boards for Teens

We recently facilitated the AWBW workshop “Vision Boards” for a group of three teens at our Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter. As dependents of individuals seeking refuge from domestic violence situations, these young people often struggle with being uprooted from their home and with the ensuing loss of control accompanying it. In order to mitigate these feelings, we invited participants to reflect on future dreams and aspirations – what they want for their futures. Participants were given poster boards and collage materials, and were invited to envision what their ideal future might look like. What’s their dream job? Where do they live? Who do they spend their time with? And how do they feel about themselves in the future?

Although initially quiet, the teens soon began sharing brief thoughts while they worked. One participant disclosed that he wants to become a mechanical engineer. Another participant shared some of her dream jobs, including being a therapist, PT, or writer. A third participant emphasized how important it was to him that he stay close to home to remain in close proximity to his loved ones. The teens talked about their path to these careers, including what schools they wanted to apply to. In addition to the more practical aspirations, they added additional items to their boards to reflect personal interests, hobbies and what inspired them, such as pets, sports, and art.

I believe that having a visual reminder of their goals will empower these teens as they navigate their futures. Our ultimate goal was to remind participants that despite their current circumstances, they can dream big, they matter and this is a safe space to share their journey however they choose. As the workshop came to an end, one of the teens expressed her disappointment at having to close this moment of time. She shared how much she had enjoyed it, and even asked if we would have another workshop the following week.
