Rediscovering Everyday Self-Care

The Wellness Center at Compton Unified School District hosts daily activities during Mental Health Awareness Month in May. One day, we hosted an activity for staff to come during lunch and create a set of dice they could roll and see ideas for self care activities on each side. Staff could use the dice during the summer break to remind them of the activities that help them relax and destress.

To our surprise, staff had a hard time getting started thinking of activities to put on their dice. Many of them struggled with taking inventory of their current self-care routines and thinking about what they already had access to. We helped with giving them some ideas of things they may already be doing they could add to their dice.

Staff expressed having fun when they finished, and said they would encourage their coworkers to stop by and participate. They reflected on how difficult it can be to think of ourselves when we are constantly doing for others, and shared gratitude for this exercise which brought that into focus in a helpful and constructive way.
