Make Your Own Luck

Cricket’s Hope helps children who have experienced various forms of trauma, including domestic violence, neglect, the loss of a loved one, or the incarceration of a family member.  No matter the severity, we aim to help all children with their difficult feelings and emotions. Our children in the ARK program (Art Restores Kids) are provided a safe environment to creatively express themselves while building skills to cope with their trauma in a safe and healthy way.

We created this workshop for children in grades 1st through 12th. During our St.Patrick’s Day party, each child had the opportunity to create a shrinky dink charm which would remind them of what they feel lucky to have. The two examples mention “friends, family, and happiness” among other statements. Children had free rein to use what colors they liked best. However, we found that sharpies worked best for shrinky dink paper.

Alongside our workshop, we had a few St. Patrick’s day activities such as Pin the Shamrock on the Leprechaun, a Penny Hunt, and snack and drink options. We also had a history lesson with fun facts to help the kids get excited about a holiday that they might not know very much about.

Our Ark program not only aims to give children an artistic outlet, but also an opportunity to learn and become passionate about a wide range of topics. To give children a better chance at remembering the workshop’s positive message, our Cricket’s Tips are passed out to the kids.
