Learning to Pause and Reset

The workshop was attended by a small group of adult participants who were interested in developing practical self-regulation strategies for managing stress and overwhelming emotions. Participants came from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, including navigating mental health challenges and substance use, and shared a common goal of learning healthy ways to pause, reset, and respond thoughtfully to everyday challenges.

Throughout the workshop, participants explored the concept of self-regulation and learned how taking brief, intentional mini breaks throughout the day can help reduce stress, improve focus, and increase emotional awareness. Engaging, hands-on activities encouraged participants to practice simple self-regulation techniques such as mindful breathing, stretching, movement breaks, grounding exercises, creative drawing, and sensory-based activities that could easily be incorporated into daily routines. These fun and practical strategies demonstrated that even a few moments of intentional self-care can help individuals reset their emotions, regain a sense of calm, and respond more effectively to life’s demands.

As participants shared their creations, many expressed that putting their coping strategies into a visual, tangible format made them feel more prepared to use them outside of the workshop. One participant shared, “I never realized I could enjoy taking a break with activities I liked to do already.” Another said, “This reminded me that it’s okay to step away and take a break.”
