Coping Skills Bingo

I am a therapist working with an 8-year-old client. The client was referred to our program because he had recently lost a father to community violence. We assessed his current coping skills, but he expressed he felt limited regarding ideas for new ones.

We played Coping Skills Bingo together. I had him create his own bingo card and select skills he had either practiced before or could envision himself trying out. He turned it into a game and celebrated each time we “passed a level”, or filled out another column on the card.

Finally, we played Coping Skills Bingo together, and he read off each skill as the number was called and asked questions for skills he was less familiar with. He was excited to share what he learned with his mother and open to trying out new skills in subsequent sessions. He has demonstrated resilience, enthusiasm, and strength, and continues to do so with his openness for trying new things.
