Art Healing Hidden Wounds

I have facilitated the My Traveling Story workshop many times, but one experience truly stands out. I worked for years with a woman who survived domestic violence. Violence from her partner that tragically took the lives of her unborn twin babies. At the time, her oldest daughter was very young, and to her knowledge, her daughter had no memory of what happened.

During the workshop, both mother and daughter unknowingly included the twins in their artwork. This unexpected expression opened the door to powerful and deeply healing conversations that might never have happened otherwise.

So often, our trauma lingers just beneath the surface, unseen and unspoken. A safe and supportive art workshop environment creates space for these hidden wounds to emerge, to be acknowledged, and to be tended to with care. This is part of the transformation that happens when we are expressing ourselves creatively, it allows us to process what words alone cannot, so we can move forward with greater understanding and peace.
