A Safe Place for Recovery

I work at a dual diagnosis substance use treatment center and mental health services outpatient facility with adults. Many of our patients are court mandated to treatment and have been previously incarcerated. Most patients have mental health diagnoses along with a substance use disorder.

I utilized the Creating A Safe/Brave Place workshop in a group. All of the group members were very receptive to the workshop.

One of the participants in particular opened up about how he purposely excluded people he “used with” from his safe place. The patient shared that his safe place reflects what he wants in sobriety which is peace and serenity.

He shared his creation with the rest of the group and welcomed their feedback on how he utilized the activity to create a space place that he envisions for his ongoing recovery.
