I organized a collage activity for the mothers currently residing at our shelter, inviting them to create visual representations of their hopes and dreams for the future. Each of them has faced the challenges of experiencing intimate partner violence, and I wanted this art workshop to be a positive outlet for their creativity. I wanted to offer an opportunity for them to focus on their aspirations, visualize a brighter future, and shift away from the hardships they have endured while reconnecting with their dreams.
The participants had a wonderful time sharing about all of the different elements they added to their collages. One of them joked, “Maybe not a Ferrari, but this will be nice to look at,” while expressing her need for a car, and another chimed in with encouragement, “Who said you won’t get there?” Despite some language barriers, they helped each other choose collage items, demonstrating a strong sense of community. It was empowering to be a part of the atmosphere of support and positivity created within the group.
Many participants whose children are in other countries included photos and symbols representing their hopes for reunification. They found comfort in knowing they were not alone, as others in the group were on similar journeys.
Childcare was provided for the participants whose children are still with them, allowing them to step away from their daily caregiving responsibilities and focus on themselves for a change. The mothers appreciated taking a break from their daily routines and shifting their focus to something fun and creative.
They poured their emotions into their art, creating vibrant collages that reflected their journeys and dreams, fully embracing the opportunity for self-expression. Once the workshop ended, many of them were excited to share their collages with their kids. They proudly displayed their collages on the walls of their rooms, transforming their personal spaces into colorful reflections of their journeys and dreams. It was clear that their spirits had been lifted after participating in the workshop.
Inspired by the positive impact of this experience, I hope to organize a collaborative art workshop for both the moms and their children, providing an opportunity for them to create together and strengthen their bond.
