Prioritizing Self-Care in Times of Change

I hosted the “Take a Break, Self-Regulate” workshop for my team during our monthly team meeting. Recently, due to changes in funding, we’ve had a lot of changes as a team, so I thought this would be the perfect workshop to encourage my team to slow down and take breaks as we adjust to the changes.

I gave options for both the spinner template and the two dice templates to give people autonomy and choice over their creation. Most people chose to use the two dice templates, but a few people chose the spinners, and I gave examples for both.

The room burst into chatter as everyone began to create and discuss their different self-care strategies together. One co-worker shared, “I am going to buy myself flowers tonight,” and another said, “I am going to buy myself flowers tomorrow” next to her. Other people shared that they like to go outside, look at the clouds, or listen to music while they drive between visits.

We left the room with dice and spinners in hand and elated spirits. Since the workshop, I’ve noticed that many of my co-workers have their dice or spinners on their desk where they can see them as visual reminders to take a break.
