This quarter, I wanted to facilitate a workshop for my local women’s group, Ladies Mingle. This group was created to help women in Orange County and nearby cities find joy. I found the group while on maternity leave and seeking connection with other moms raising young children. The great thing about the group is we have all “opted in” to be a part of it to create meaningful friendships, network, and support each other. I have made strong friendships with many women in the group. I also lead the mom subgroup focusing on maternal wellness—planning, organizing, and leading monthly events for moms to socialize and share the struggles of parenting.
I led the Buddhist-derived, Loving-Kindness activity at Rescued Eras, a local thrift boutique in the city of Orange. The owner was so gracious in offering the space to host our event. We shared food, listened to relaxing music and exchanged business cards. As we sat together and practiced the mantra of “May you be happy, safe, healthy, and peaceful” and colored pages, the six of us connected on a deeper level. Someone mentioned remembering the stress related to raising small children (us moms who were present were so excited to have time for ourselves away from the stressors of parenting) and how they appreciate the time they have now to practice self-care. Someone else reflected that it “allowed me the moment to slow down and reflect, which is rare with my busy lifestyle.”
After the workshop, the women said they felt relaxed and interested to continue practicing self-compassion. One participant shared, “Self-compassion is great but when you are surrounded by other compassionate women, it intensifies it. It felt good to be heard amongst the others. It felt like a safe place.”
