Helping Students in Career Development Classes Discover What Makes Them Shine

As a career development program, The Way helps individuals gain skills, confidence, and opportunities to thrive in the workforce. I had the pleasure of working with our Career Workforce Development Class—students who are eager to find employment and learn more about their rights in the workplace.

The workshop I led, “What Makes Me Shine,” focused on helping participants identify the qualities and experiences that bring out their best selves. We started with a calming deep-breathing exercise to set a positive tone and made sure everyone felt comfortable and supported. I also encouraged participants to share their reflections only if they felt ready to do so.

One participant, who has a degree in Fine Arts, shared that the workshop was especially meaningful for him. He said it helped him reconnect with his creative side—something he hadn’t done in a long time—and reminded him of what truly makes him shine. Moments like that really captured the spirit of the session.

The class included adult students ranging from their 30s to 60s, and it was such a joy to see how engaged and self-aware they were. Their willingness to reflect and participate made the experience inspiring and uplifting for everyone.

Overall, it was a truly rewarding session, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with such an amazing group.
