I had the opportunity to complete my first workshop with all clinical staff members during our organization’s All Clinical Meeting. In today’s world, therapists wear many hats. We are clinicians, advocates, caregivers, supervisors, learners, and often support systems not only for our clients, but for our colleagues, families, and communities as well. With so many responsibilities and emotional demands, it is essential that we intentionally pause to explore how we are supporting our own mental and emotional well-being.
The art-based workshop I chose to facilitate, My Internal Dashboard, was designed to create space for reflection around how therapists fuel themselves while carrying the weight of so many roles. The activity encouraged participants to identify what energizes them, what drains them, and what warning signs show up when their internal “fuel tank” begins to run low. The goal was not perfection, but awareness, recognizing internal signals before reaching burnout or emotional exhaustion.
Throughout the workshop, clinicians engaged deeply in the process. Many therapists shared feeling surprised by what surfaced during the activity, noting that it brought awareness to needs or stressors they had not previously acknowledged. Others reflected on how rarely they allow themselves to slow down and check in with their own internal state. The collective response emphasized how meaningful it was to have permission and protected time to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves in a supportive environment.
Overall, the workshop reinforced the importance of self-awareness and proactive self-care within the clinical profession. Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to explore new ways to fuel themselves, recognize early warning signs of burnout, and consider practical strategies to sustain their well-being. This experience highlighted how intentional reflection can strengthen not only individual clinicians, but the health and resilience of our clinical community as a whole.
